Not because they're broken.
Not because no one wants them.

Because the person giving didn't know the person who needed them lived three blocks away.

We've all seen it — a solid bookshelf on the curb, a lamp that still works perfectly, a couch that just needs a new home. Someone left it there hoping someone would take it. And someone probably would have. If only they'd known it was there.

That gap — between the Giver and the Finder — is exactly what CurbSofa was built to close.

Where It Started

It started with a table.

One afternoon in Los Angeles, I spotted a mid-century wooden table left on the curb — no sign, no note, just abandoned. I picked it up on instinct and took it home. That table still sits in my living room today.

But it made me think. How many items like that were sitting on curbs across the city right now — perfectly good, completely free — and disappearing into garbage trucks simply because nobody knew they were there?

The answer, it turned out, was millions. Americans throw away over 12 million tons of furniture every year. Most of it still works. The problem isn't the stuff — it's the connection between the person who doesn't need it anymore and the person who does.

CurbSofa is that connection. A map. A community. A small daily act that keeps good things out of landfills.

How It Works

CurbSofa is a web app where you can browse a real-time map of free items left on the curb near you. You can also post items you're giving away — your old sofa, a bookshelf, electronics that still work — so your neighbors can find them before the garbage truck does.

Everything is first come, first served. No reservations, no commitments. Just show up and take it home.

Users earn points called Karma for every item posted and picked up — a small way to recognize the givers who make this community run.
